A post by Co-Creator/Director Lindsay Kavet.

A few days ago I posted a photo on Instagram of Tracy Chapman. I had been hearing her song, “All That You Have is Your Soul” in my head all day. I couldn’t wait to play it once everyone in my family had gone to bed.

Music re-connects me so much to my younger self. A good time to re-connect to my idealistic self. At night, when the kids are asleep. What music inspires you?

Another mommy blogger, Kim Tracy Prince,  here in LA happened upon the photo and she wrote about it here.

I love that we moms have this outlet. This way to connect.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

Oh my mama told me
‘Cause she say she learned the hard way
Say she wanna spare the children
She say don’t give or sell your soul away
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

So don’t be tempted by the shiny apple
Don’t you eat of a bitter fruit
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

I was a pretty young girl once
I had dreams I had high hopes
Married a man he stole my heart away
Gave his love but what a high price I paid
All that you have is your soul

Don’t be tempted by the shiny apple
Don’t you eat of a bitter fruit
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

Why was I such a young fool
Thought I’d make history
Making babies was the best I could do
Thought I’d made something that could be mine forever
Found out the hard way one can’t possess another
And all that you have is your soul

Don’t be tempted by the shiny apple
Don’t you eat of a bitter fruit
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

I thought, thought I could find a way
Beat the system;
Make a deal and have no debts to pay
Take it all, I’d take it all, I’d run away
For me myself first class and first rate
But all that you have is your soul

So don’t be tempted by the shiny apple
Don’t you eat of a bitter fruit
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

Here I am, I’m waiting for a better day
A second chance
A little luck to come my way
A hope to dream, a hope that I can sleep again
And wake in the world with a clear conscience and clean hands
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

Don’t be tempted by the shiny apple
Don’t you eat of a bitter fruit
Hunger only for a taste of justice
Hunger only for a world of truth
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

Oh my mama told me
‘Cause she say she learned the hard way
Say she wanna spare the children
She say don’t give or sell your soul away
‘Cause all that you have is your soul

All that you have
All that you have
All that you have
Is your soul

In the next few weeks I will be diving into the music selection for the show. It’s such a fun, cathartic time. Very personal as I think about each piece and the person who wrote it and what they are/were going through and I try to pick an appropriate piece. I feel like it is a lead up to the show and the show is so raw that I feel like I begin to step back into my old 19 year-old self. My idealistic self.

My former neighbor and forever friend Anne Litt is our music supervisor and has offered most of the musical inspiration for our shows. She has set the soundtrack to my LA weekends with my kids for years now.

It’s some of my favorite alone time.
