Expressing Motherhood & Giving Back

Expressing Motherhood always give a portion of our profits to empowering women and our communities. For almost 10 years we’ve been proud to donate to Family Care International.

From their site, “In 1986, the world was paying little attention to the hundreds of thousands of women dying in pregnancy and childbirth each year. Family Care International was the first international organization dedicated to maternal health, founded out of a determination to remedy this neglect. FCI has been working ever since — collaboratively, innovatively, and effectively — to make pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world.”

Local Iowa Producers and sisters, Kerry Anderson and Karen Rothert were passionate about donating all of their proceeds to Opening Doors Dubuque.

Here is some information about them:

“Opening Doors is the nonprofit organization that operates Maria House and Teresa Shelter. Homeless women, alone or with children, come to us to help rebuild their lives. We provide goal setting and life skills training that will enable them to take care of themselves and achieve their full potential. Women are dependent when they come in…independent when they leave.”

Since 2000, Maria House has provided transitional housing, where residents can stay for as long as two years. In 2006, we opened Teresa Shelter. It offers short-term emergency shelter services and an extended stay program.”

Our Dubuque show is next month, one night only at Loras college, get your tickets here.

We have paired up with a local non-profit out of Portland for our October 17th show, called Family Forward Action.

10% of the proceeds from that show will go towards Family Forward Action.

I also have to insert that when I emailed the cast if they had any suggestions for a local non-profit, one cast member directed me to Family Forward Action and it turns out another cast member works for them!

Here is some information about their wonderful organization.

“We are parents, employers, caregivers, and activists that believe that our current economy can and must do more to support working families. We need paid sick days, paid family leave, workplace flexibility, and quality and affordable child care, and more. These policies are good for families, good for business, and good for Oregon.”

Tickets for our Portland show can be purchased here.

Lastly, we are excited to help support Alliance of Moms, right here in Los Angeles. 10% of our proceeds will be going to this fabulous community.

I met Co-Founder Jules Leyer at a MomDot.Me event last Fall and was taken in by her passion for helping young mothers who have been through the foster care system. Jules and her partner, Yasmine Delawari Johnson have done an incredible job at creating a nurturing community.

“Alliance of moms is a new generation of philathropists whose mission is to break the intergenerational cycle of babies born to teens in foster care.”

Tickets for our LA show are not yet available, submissions for the show will be accepted July 15-20.

It has been a joy discovering new non-profits and and supporting women in our cities, country and abroad for nearly 10 years now.

Expressing Motherhood Heads to Dubuque, Iowa

Expressing Motherhood is headed to Dubuque, Iowa for the first time this summer. Local Producer/Director Kerry Anderson will be bringing #ExMoShow to beautiful Iowa in July.
Kerry Anderson
Kerry is a South Bay mom and ExMoShow alum,  just about every summer she visits her sister and her family in Dubuque.  “My children get to hang out with their cousins and experience a true midwestern summer complete with frog catching, fireflies, and porch eatin’ popsicle time.
Through Expressing Motherhood I’ve met many people with extraordinary stories who were brave enough to share it with an audience.  After every show audience members would rush up to performers to tell them, “That’s my story!” or “Thank you, I needed to hear that story.”  Expressing Motherhood is a gift and I want to bring that gift to one of my favorite places in the country, Dubuque.”
Karen Anderson Rothert
Kerry’s sister, Karen Anderson Rothert, and her family live in Dubuque. She will also be acting as a Local Producer along with Kerry. The show ill be performed at Karen’s alma mater, Loras College. This is the only way she could get her sister to extend her vacation time.  She is excited to become an official member of the Expressing Motherhood community.
Submissions will be accepted April 10th- 14th, please send submissions to dubuque(at)expressingmotherhood.com For more submissions info please visit our submissions page.
Performers will be announced April 17th.
There will be one rehearsal on Friday, July 14th from 6:30-9:30PM. The performance will be Saturday, July 15th at 7:00PM at Loras College in the St. Joseph’s Auditorium in Hoffman Hall.
As always, Expressing Motherhood is looking for people to share their stories about motherhood on stage. Pieces need to be 5 minutes maximum. We are looking for true stories. Your stories, about motherhood. Need not be a mom!
Expressing Motherhood is thrilled to have Kerry  and Karen bring this to Iowa. Looking forward to it. #ExMoShow

ExMoShow NEW Video Series

Expressing Motherhood is happy to kick the 2017 off with a new video series. The videos feature past performers sharing stories they have shared on the Expressing Motherhood stage, with you.

Filming the women in a studio has entailed that the pieces translate the best they can for the viewers at home.  Thank you Emily DeRenzis and Megan Dolon for being the first two to participate. Emily shares her story of going over to her ex-husband’s new home for the first time.

Megan shares the story of when she first learned that her son has Aspergers.

Each piece is followed with a brief Q&A about how motherhood has inspired and/or changed their creative path. A huge thank you to them both.

Please subscribe to our YouTube Channel as more videos will be released soon.

That’s A Wrap

Expressing Motherhood just wrapped its two weekend run in Silver Lake. A huge thank you to all of the performers and all of the audience members.

10687266_10152880842502974_5254803456917495338_o-1

I have been producing this show for 7 years now.

10388646_10152875883147974_2534759637720348360_n

As I drove home on Saturday night I was filled with a calm happiness that I knew would be brief but utterly connected me to all that brings me joy.

Backstage is a show in itself.

10868038_10152878496562974_3291218208354362400_n 10417741_10152868766877974_7101707551438547846_n 10425154_10152875766147974_3267797574937134229_n

A bonding similar to summer camp happens only much quicker and without the ugliness. There is lots of drinking; water, tea, coffee, wine, bourbon. Lots of stifled laughing and shushing from me.

There are moments I can’t share but really are a story all unto themselves.

Then there are the brave performers who sit under the blue light going over their words. Most of them coming off a regular day, watching kids or working.

10354663_10152867522532974_8110511876244539082_n-1

Then transforming themselves in the dressing room and braving the audience night after night.

10704128_10152863188422974_879518004704517288_n-1

Every night in theatre is different.

As Loretta Fox whispered to me “It’s live theatre!” As I tried to fix something happening backstage, we both shrugged and smiled.

It’s live and lively and makes me feel totally alive.
