Expressing Motherhood & Giving Back

Expressing Motherhood always give a portion of our profits to empowering women and our communities. For almost 10 years we’ve been proud to donate to Family Care International.

From their site, “In 1986, the world was paying little attention to the hundreds of thousands of women dying in pregnancy and childbirth each year. Family Care International was the first international organization dedicated to maternal health, founded out of a determination to remedy this neglect. FCI has been working ever since — collaboratively, innovatively, and effectively — to make pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world.”

Local Iowa Producers and sisters, Kerry Anderson and Karen Rothert were passionate about donating all of their proceeds to Opening Doors Dubuque.

Here is some information about them:

“Opening Doors is the nonprofit organization that operates Maria House and Teresa Shelter. Homeless women, alone or with children, come to us to help rebuild their lives. We provide goal setting and life skills training that will enable them to take care of themselves and achieve their full potential. Women are dependent when they come in…independent when they leave.”

Since 2000, Maria House has provided transitional housing, where residents can stay for as long as two years. In 2006, we opened Teresa Shelter. It offers short-term emergency shelter services and an extended stay program.”

Our Dubuque show is next month, one night only at Loras college, get your tickets here.

We have paired up with a local non-profit out of Portland for our October 17th show, called Family Forward Action.

10% of the proceeds from that show will go towards Family Forward Action.

I also have to insert that when I emailed the cast if they had any suggestions for a local non-profit, one cast member directed me to Family Forward Action and it turns out another cast member works for them!

Here is some information about their wonderful organization.

“We are parents, employers, caregivers, and activists that believe that our current economy can and must do more to support working families. We need paid sick days, paid family leave, workplace flexibility, and quality and affordable child care, and more. These policies are good for families, good for business, and good for Oregon.”

Tickets for our Portland show can be purchased here.

Lastly, we are excited to help support Alliance of Moms, right here in Los Angeles. 10% of our proceeds will be going to this fabulous community.

I met Co-Founder Jules Leyer at a MomDot.Me event last Fall and was taken in by her passion for helping young mothers who have been through the foster care system. Jules and her partner, Yasmine Delawari Johnson have done an incredible job at creating a nurturing community.

“Alliance of moms is a new generation of philathropists whose mission is to break the intergenerational cycle of babies born to teens in foster care.”

Tickets for our LA show are not yet available, submissions for the show will be accepted July 15-20.

It has been a joy discovering new non-profits and and supporting women in our cities, country and abroad for nearly 10 years now.

Expressing Motherhood Gives Back

Expressing Motherhood gives a portion of our profits from every show to Family Care International.

25 years of making pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world.

We chose it because my father in law, Herb Kavet, started telling me how great micro financing projects can be. Jessica and I immediately gravitated towards Family Care International because we feel lucky to live in a place where we have so many options regarding childbirth, and realize that millions of women around the world do not have the same options.

In 2013 a woman dies from complications of pregnancy or during labor every TWO MINUTES. Family Care International is helping to make pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world.

Why we chose Family Care International as our charity of choice

A post by Expressing Motherhood Co-Creator/Director Lindsay Kavet.

Ever since our second show, there were no profits with the first, we have donated between 5-10% of our money to Family Care International. It is a charity that is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world.

Here is their mission statement:

FCI envisions a world where no woman suffers preventable injury or death from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes, and in which all people are able to enjoy their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Being a show that highlights mothers stories we have received and spotlighted a lot of birthing stories. What has always struck me is the fact that we live in a country where we are lucky enough to have birthing plans, access to hospitals, doctors, midwives, medicine, choices, endless access to help and information.

That’s me at Cedars baby! Delivering baby #3.

At a bare minimum, a woman should be helped as much as possible to have a healthy pregnancy. And here we are in 2012 and women, far too many, are dying in labor or while pregnant.

Here is a mind blowing fact from FCI, “Every two minutes, every single day, a woman dies needlessly from complications of pregnancy or childbirth.”
